Ipswich museum holds an exceptional collection of British insects. These collections of approximately 250,000 specimens combine to illustrate the diversity of insect life in Suffolk
Collections include
- Diptera
- Coleoptera
- Lepidoptera
- Hymenoptera
The main collections are those of Claude Morley and J. H. Hocking.
Other notable collections include E. T. Goldsmith Collection, C. W. Pierce Collection, H. E. Chipperfield Collection and G. J. Burton Collection.
There are also smaller but equally interesting collections of foreign insects.
Where?
The newly refurbished Morley room is situated at the High Street Exhibition Gallery adjacent to the High Street Museum. The collection is available to researchers by appointment only, please contact Ann Ainsworth - Assistant Curator of Natural History for more information.
