Project Description:
Due to the success of the previous two projects, another project was planned. As Osbourne Car park in Colchester had been fully decorated it meant the next challenge would be to decorate Nunns Road car park instead. One of the stairwells and part of the walkway were next to be decorated. As in the previous project the young people had a workshop session where they learnt about the history of graffiti, thought about what designs they wanted to be in the stairwell and worked on their own board to learn how to use the spray cans. Over two days the young people all worked together to paint the designs on the walls. Due to being involved in one of the previous projects one participant wanted to be involved in this project even though his reparation hours were finished. The designs are varied from paintings of the Castle to images from the Oyster Feast and Roman soldiers. At the end of the project the young people gained self confidence and pride in their work.
The previous project occured in two sections. It started in November 2010 and then again in May and late summer 2011. In both stages the project started with a one day workshop where the young people learnt about the history of graffiti and how to use a spray can. After designing and then working on their own board they soon learnt the different techniques used by graffiti artists. At the sessions it was also a chance for the group to think about key themes linked to the museums in Colchester or Colchester itself. These themes were then incorporated into the final design which would later be painted on the car park stairwells. Over the course of a weekend the group would come together to put their designs onto the walls of the stairwells. The young people gained confidence, new artistic skills, a sense of achievement and pride.
