Creative Graffiti at Nunns Road Car Park
Wednesday 17th August 2011
11.30am – 12.30pm
NCP – Nunn’s Road Car Park, Colchester
Press call at 11.15am – 11.45pm at NCP, Nunn’s Road Car Park, Colchester. Your chance to meet project participants, Cllr. Nick Barlow, spokespersons from Colchester and Ipswich Museums and National Car Parks.
No it’s not vandalism, it’s a partnership between National Car Parks (NCP) and Colchester and Ipswich Museums. On Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th August some young people from the Youth Offending Team will be getting creative on a large scale, working along side Scott Irving, professional graffiti artist, to create a mural in the Nunn’s Road Car Park central stairwell and part of the inside walkway through Williams and Griffins.
This new project follows on from the success of the first Graffiti project in 2010 and 2011, when Colchester and Ipswich Museums worked in partnership with National Car Parks and the Youth Offending Team to create a mural about Colchester in the Osborne car park stairwell. This mural includes scenes of the Romans, the Civil War, Colchester oysters, Boudica and the Zoo!
The themes in Nunn’s Road Car Park will focus on the local area and will include the Iron Foundry, Town Hall, Oyster Feast and the Corn Exchange.
“This has proven to be a fantastic initiative for all those involved and we are very pleased to be continuing to work in a partnership with NCP," says Geri Cowell, Assistant Community Outreach Officer at Colchester and Ipswich Museums. "As well as brightening up the car park, we hope to have given the young offenders something creative and constructive to focus on and be proud of.”
Cllr. Barlow, Colchester Borough Council - Commerce and Sustainability Portfolio Holder said, "We hope this will give visitors to the town a colourful welcome and a reminder of some of its history."
This is a great reminder that a car park can make a positive impact on the community, with a little innovation and effort.
