Be inspired and create some funky beats!
Drumming Workshops
Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th February
Ipswich Art School
Explore the museum’s African collections and artwork by Chinwe Roy, and use these to inspire some funky beats. You will use real drums and work with musician George Fothergill to pick up some simple drumming techniques and create some cracking tunes which will bring the Art School alive!
These sessions will be lively, fun, interactive for the whole family and there will be an under 5’s area for the little ones.
Nigerian-born Chinwe Chukwuogo-Roy’s shows ‘Behind the Mask’, a body of new work made as a direct response to the Charles Partridge Collection, on show in Ipswich Museum. Charles Partridge was an Edwardian Suffolk Colonial Officer in Nigeria and his collection of the Ibibio is close to Chinwe’s own traditional cultural heritage as an Igbo. Chinwe has taken particular inspiration from one of the Ekpo masks Partridge collected from the Ibibio people to explore the theme of masks and ‘masking’.
Through her new paintings, drawings and 3D work Chinwe invites the audience to contemplate the notions of disguise and façade. Devices through which people have sought to articulate the complexities of everyday life, the African Colonial experience, and the contemporary conflicts over cultural identity that face the African Diaspora. This exhibition will be on show at the Art School until 4th March.
Music and rhythm always add a magical element to an exhibition, and these workshops are a great chance to get involved and get down with the beat!
Drumming sessions are at 10.30am, 11.30am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. These sessions are very popular, so please book in advance by calling 01473 433570. Drumming sessions cost just £2 per person.
This is just one of the many events we have happening this February half-term. To find our more visit www.cimuseums.org.uk/whats-on.
