Colchester Castle Museum

Roman Britain + family fun + changing exhibitions

Follow in the footsteps of Roman soldiers, Norman invaders, the Witchfinder General and the devastation of Queen Boudica.  Explore over 2000 years of some of the most important events in British history in this magnificent Castle!  There is so much to discover.

Be part of history as you experience the rise and fall of this town's past through its many internationally significant stories and objects.  Why was Colchester so rich during the Roman occupation and how did it come to such a destructive end?

Explore the galleries and touch real Roman pottery, feel the weight of Roman armour, try on medieval hats, shoes and costumes, enjoy brass rubbings, try on a toga and much more - don't forget to bring your camera!

Castle Tours

Discover the secrets of the largest Castle ever built by the Normans.  It was constructed on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius, which can still be seen today on a guided tour (a small extra charge applies for the tour).
