Colchester Castle Museum

What can you see?

Colchester Castle Museum takes you through 2000 years of some of the most important events in British history.

The collection has 'designated status' based on its quality and significance. These inspiring collections represent a vital part of our national cultural and artistic heritage.

Highlights!

Some of the most important historical finds in Britain can be seen here including:

  • Sheepen Cauldron
  • Gold Coins of Cunobelin
  • The Lexden Medallion
  • Tombstones of Facilis and Longinus
  • The Gosbecks Mercury
  • Colchester Vase
  • The St Osyth Green Lady

We aim to open all galleries at all times. Occasionally, galleries need to be closed at short notice due to conservation, maintenance works or events. If you are coming to the museum to see something in a specific gallery, you are advised to call to check before you travel by calling 01206 282939.

Exhibitions

We will always have a changing exhibition programme in addition to the main museum galleries. This means that you get an extra special free exhibition included in your admission fee to the Castle and a chance to experience different collections and stories from our past that are not usually on display or explored in the main permanent gallery experience. Go to what's on  for latest details.

Events

We bring art and history to life in a fun way with our events programme.  There is a programme of events for both  families and adults that runs throughout the year, these details can be found on our what's on page.
These include events like appearances by historical characters, craft and art workshops, tours, talks, quizzes and much more!
