From the Romans to the present day, many different people have chosen to make Colchester their home. This exhibition explores some of the reasons behind their decision to come here and looks at the legacy left by them today.

Roman walls, a Norman castle, the Dutch Quarter and the Garrison, these are just some of the landmarks of Colchester’s history of settlers. Objects on display will include items representing some of these people and their contributions and visitors can listen to contemporary stories of immigration too.

Objects will include: An amphora used by the Romans to store food and wine + Bay cloth, made famous by Dutch weavers + a travelling trunk used by a Polish refugee in the 1940s to bring all her belongings.

I am writing an extended poetry piece for my Open University Creative Writing module. The theme is based on the winter solstice, but I have set the poems around the time of the Roman invasion in 43AD and the Iceni tribe. I want to contrast religious and cultural practices around that time as the Iceni became integrated into the Roman life. I 'll finish with the devestation caused by Boudica. Do you have any information that you could email me on life in Britain from around 43 AD to 60AD from Celtic and Roman perspectives? thank you for your help in this. Ann
